Ludovicus (Louis) moest vanaf zijn 14de jaar gaan werken. Ondanks de uitdrukkelijke vraag van zijn school, omdat hij goede resultaten behaalde, om verder te kunnen studeren besliste zijn ouders toch om het stopzetten van zijn school. Het gezin had, zoals dat destijds dikwijls ging, de noodzaak om een bijkomend inkomen.
Louis ging werken in de fabriek Brepols te Turnhout en leerde daar het beroep van boekbinder. Dezelfde fabriek waar zijn vader werkte. Aanvankelijk als helper van zijn vader die hem de "stiel" moest leren.
Nadien heeft hij zo goed als zijn ganse loopbaan in de fabriek "La Belgica" gespecialiseerd in het fabriceren van speciale papierwaren en kartonnage.
Zijn schoenbroer Maurice Ceelen werkte hier eveneens als meestergast.
