Notes about Maria Catharina "Goeie Mie" Swanenburg

Op 9 september 1839 werd Maria Catharina Swanenburg geboren, zij was de dochter van Clemens Swanenburg en Johanna Dingjan. Zij had nog elf broers en zussen, waarvan de meesten op vroege leeftijd overleden. Mie huwde met Johannes van der Linden en kreeg met hem diverse kinderen, die bijna allen vroeg stierven. Maria, of Mie, verdiende geld door de was te doen bij andere mensen. Ook werkte ze als kinderoppas en als ziekenverzorgster. Ze stond als zodanig zo goed bekend dat ze de bijnaam 'goeie Mie' kreeg. Maar niemand wist dat ze onderwijl ze voor veel van haar patiënten een begrafenisverzekering afsloot en voor sommige van hen betaalde ze zelf de premie van 7,5 cent per week. Toen ze overleden, kreeg Mie liefst 50 gulden.

In december 1883 stierven binnen een maand een zus en een zwager van Mie, benevens hun zoon Hendrik. Izak Ouwerkerk, een familielid, kreeg argwaan en de dokter werd ingeschakeld. Deze ontdekte dat de drie mensen vergiftigd waren met arsenicum. Mie werd gearresteerd en toen werden de 16 lijken opgegraven van een aantal mensen, voor wie Mie een verzekering had afgesloten. Ook zij bleken vergiftigd te zijn, bleek uit een lijkschouwing door de Leidse hoogleraren Zaaijer en De Koning in het Anatomisch Kabinet. Mie bekende dat ze bij de apotheek een middel tegen wandluis had gekocht (Operment) dat bestond uit een deel zwavel en vier delen arsenicum. Het spul was zo slecht vermengd dat Mie de arsenicum er zo af kon scheppen. Dat mengde ze met de soep die ze maakte voor haar 21 slachtoffers.

Haar proces kreeg belangstelling uit binnen- en buitenland. Haar advocaat mr. C.A.Vaillant vond dat Mie ontoerekeningsvatbaar was, maar dat werd niet geloofd. Ze werd veroordeeld tot levenslange tuchthuisstraf die ze uitzat in de vrouwengevangenis in Gorinchem. De doodstraf was al in 1870 afgeschaft, maar door dit proces waren er weer mensen die vonden dat 'monsters' het niet verdienden om te blijven leven.
