De grootvader van Bartholomeus, Lammert (Lambertus) Wer(c)k (Warike) (IVb.), pleegde in zijn huwelijk met Johanna (Jannetje) van de(r) Velde overspel met de destijds ongehuwde Sara Paradijs, grootmoeder van Sara Laterveer. Dit misdrijf en nog een tweede zijn vastgelegd in:
Een opmerkelijk weefpatroon in Leiden, Rijnland, mededelingenblad van de afdeling Rijnland van de Nederlandse Genealogische Vereniging, juni 2009, jaargang 14 nr. 2, blz. 14-16.
Met vijf dukaten handgeld trad Bartholomeus, één meter en 65 centimeter lang, op 27-jarige leeftijd toe als fuselier in het Eerste Depôt Battaillon Infanterie. Met het 6e Battaillon Infanterie van Linie nam hij deel aan de slag van Waterloo. Hij ontving hiervoor 29 gulden en tien cent gratificatie. Op 1 november 1819 zwaaide Bartholomeus af.
