Berigten uit de Provincien.
Delft: 9 februari 1869 – Heden had hier eene ongekende en welligt nimmer
vroeger binnen onze stad aldus plaats gehad hebbende plegtigheid plaats.
Er werd namelijk eene vrouw – zegge eene vrouw ! – met militaire treurmuziek
begraven.
Johanna Krieke, weduwe van Nicolaas van den Agtersloot, oud 84 jaar, in
leven marketentster, die niet alleen de Russischen veldtogt, maar ook de
veldslagen van Leipzig en Waterloo bijwoonde, werd met het uitvoeren
eener treurmarsch door de stafmuzikanten der artillerie, welke de lijkkoets
voorafgingen, en de insigniën hare betrekking, haar veldhoed, medaille, en
het tonnetje, door haar zoo vele jaren in het veld gebruikt, - alles op haar
lijkkist bevestigd – op het R.Cath. kerkhof ter aarde besteld, te voet gevolgd
door de oud-strijders van Waterloo met hun zilveren kruisen en in een
rijtuig door den commissaris van politie, den WelEd. Gestr. heer J.W.
Kröller, ridder van verschillende orden en daaronder ook van het zilveren
kruis van Waterloo.
Wij zochten te vergeefs naar dit zilveren kruis der dappere marketentster,
die met haar man toch ook zoo menig malen den kruiddamp had geroken.
En de gedachte kwam bij ons op, of, waar wel Vorstinnen met dergelijke
eereblijken worden begiftigd, deze vrouw, bij de uitdeeling van zilveren
kruisen aan al degenen die den veldtogt van Waterloo bijwoonden, niet
eveneens geregtigd tot de ontvangst daarvan zou geweest zijn, zoo als men
na haar dood haar – zeker tot veler genoegen met militaire honneurs –
grafwaarts geleidde.
