Hij is in September 1939 weer opgekomen tijdens de algemene mobilisatie en in Mei 1940 brak de oorlog uit. Hij had daarvoor ook al in dienst gezeten, maar hij was al weer een jaar of 6, 7 uit dienst en getrouwd. Dus hij moest als reserve opkomen want hij was al 28 jaar. Op 11 januari 1940 trouwde hij met Maretta Glasbergen. Het huwelijk werd ingezegend in de oude Petra kerk door dominee Henk Post. Het was een strenge winter en er lag toen sneeuw.
