Als Maerte Tonis, met twee kinderen, afkomstig van Zuid-Beveland werd Maarten op 01-10-1691 poorter te Zierikzee.
Van 1694-1703 dienaar in het Woord van de doopsgezinde gemeente te Zierikzee.
Met attestatie d.d. 14-11-1703 van Zierikzee met "toestemming van meest al de ledematen" tot leraar te Ouddorp gekozen.
Op 07-07-1707 door oudste Cornelis van Braght van Dordrecht in de volle dienst bevestigd.
Gedurende zijn dienst werden 45 personen aan de gemeente toegevoegd.
Was de eerste Ouddorpse leraar die consequent de Sociéteitsvergaderingen (1704-1724) bezocht.
Maarten Tanis werd opgevolgd door Claas Cornelisz. Jongejan (bron W. Stuve).
