Jacob Gilles Schotel en Anthonia Noteman metselaar/aannemer nam op 3-1-1842 het metselaarsbedrijf in Dordrecht over van zijn ongetrouwde oom Leendert Schotel (1785) metselaar / amateurschilder /lid van Pictura te Dordrecht z.v. Gilles Schotel Adriaanz (metselaar /amateurschilder / lid van Pictura te Dordrecht)
Jan Schotel leerde het vak van metselaar van zijn vader. Hij was 14 jaar en van beroep metselaar, als hij zich in maart 1859 inschrijft bij de Industrie en Tekenschool te Dordrecht. Kortweg de Tekenschool genoemd.
In archief 178 van de Industrie en Tekenschool in Stadsarchief Dordrecht zijn leerlingenlijsten en hun vakken bewaard gebleven.
In de periode 1861/1862 is te zien welke vakken Jan Schotel daar gevolgd heeft o.a. rechtlijnig tekenen (leraar Dhr van Gent), natuurkunde (leraar Dhr Cruger), scheikunde (leraar Dhr Stokhart), stel en meetkunde (leraar Kempers), doorzichtkunde en werktuigkunde (leraar J.W. van Oordt), beschrijvende bouwkunde en technologie (leraar W.A. Rust).
