Jan was broodbakker, hij had een bakkerij in de Rijkestraat te 's-Gravendeel. Het echtpaar trok na 1847 van 's-Gravendeel naar Rotterdam en voor 1857 naar Kinderdijk (wellicht met hun dochter Elisabeth, getrouwd met Johann Weuch, die een water- en vuurnering uitoefende en 1856 naar Rotterdam en later naar Kinderdijk verhuisde). Volgens een aantekening in het streekmuseum te Heinenoord zou Jan niet hebben kunnen schrijven.
