Jonann Friedrich Philipp kwam als bakker in 1852 naar Amsterdam.
In de Burgerlijke Stand van Amsterdam staat hij vervolgens eerst als werkman ingeschreven, later als stoker en vervolgens alshoofdmachinist.
Hij heeft zich dus in de praktijk geschoold en de overgang van zeilvaart naar stoomvaart meegemaakt.
In1852 woonde hij bij het gezin Wix-de Haan in de Bethlehemsteeg 827.
Zijn vrouw Caatje, afkomstig uit Haastrecht, kwam bij dit gezin als dienstbode werken.
Later woonden zij op verschillende adressen in Amsterdam
J.F.P.Kesting heeft vanaf de oprichting tot kort voor zijn overlijden, als machinist bij de K.N.S.M. gevaren.
Ook zijn zoons Jacobus Gabriel en Frederik zijn machinisten bij de KNSM geweest
