Voordat toestemming werd gegeven voor een huwelijk, keek de pastoor of er geen redenen waren die een huwelijk in de weg stonden. Voor sommigen redenen werd dispensatie of vrijstelling gegeven in de vorm van een huwelijksdispensatie.

Het belangrijkste huwelijksbeletsel was bloedverwantschap of aanverwantschap. Veel dispensaties werden ook gegeven voor huwelijken die plaatsvonden tijdens de zogenaamde besloten tijd of voor het achterwege laten van één of meer huwelijksafkondigingen (roepen). Vooral de dispensaties wegens verwantschap kunnen de genealoog in een keer enkele stappen verder brengen, wanneer wordt beschreven welke gezamenlijke voorouders beide huwelijkskandidaten hebben. Helaas zijn veel dispensaties verloren gegaan.

Niet alleen bij huwelijken werden genealogische schema's gemaakt. Ook bij processen wegens bijvoorbeeld een erfenis kwamen de partijen vaker aanzetten met verklaringen en bewijzen die hun afstamming en rechten moesten aantonen.
