John's first marriage, in 1201, was to Cecily, the daughter of Walter de Waleran (c. 1143-1200), of Shaftesbury, Dorset, and one of three heiresses to his very large estate. They had two sons, John (who became lord of Monmouth upon his father's death but died with no issue c 1257) and William, and three daughters. After Cecily died in 1222, John remarried to Agnes de Muscegros, the daughter of Walter de Muscegros. They had three sons: John, who became lord of Monmouth upon his older half-brother's death but was executed for murder c 1281, Walter and Richard. Upon this latter John's death, the vast estates and honours were ceded to the crown.
