Tot 1954 was Rien een buurschap van Lytsewierrum op de plaats waar de Franekervaart de oude dijk, de hoep, van het poldereiland van Easterein doorsnijdt. In 1954 kreeg Rien de dorpsstatus. De dijk dateert van vóór het jaar 1000, maar de nederzetting is jonger.

Het is niet bekend wanneer de scheepvaartverbinding tussen Sneek en Franeker precies is gevormd. Feit is dat hier een sluis in de ringdijk van het poldereiland zat. In stukken uit het midden van de 16de eeuw wordt het gemeld. Er kan toen een schutsluis voor de scheepvaart hebben gelegen. Toen de waterpeilen beter op elkaar waren afgestemd, kon de sluis vervallen. Wel is er sprake van zowel de Rienstersyl als de Rienstertille. Toen hadden zich al mensen gevestigd op deze aantrekkelijke plek in de infrastructuur van Hennaarderadeel en Baarderadeel voor wat overslag en handel. Rien was eeuwenlang bekend om zijn jaarlijkse paardenmarkt.

Hier is niet een kerk het brandpunt van de gemeenschap, maar een brug. De noordelijke oever van de Franekervaart bestaat uit een ruime kade. Daar ligt een brede buurt met een vrij gesloten en gevarieerde bebouwing, onder meer van oude pakhuizen. Deze ruimtelijk wat gedeukte bebouwing aan de kade is schilderachtig. Achter deze streek is losse achterbebouwing tot stand gekomen. Die is via steegjes te bereiken. Aan de andere zijde staat alleen bij de brug enige bebouwing. Bij die brug is de structuur op z'n dichtst met aan de westzijde een straatje en diagonaal daartegenover, bijna tegen de brug aan, de voormalige waterherberg, een gestukadoord bouwwerk van omstreeks 1900. De vroeger aanwezige ornamenten zijn afgesleten maar op de verdieping zitten nog wel twee grote wapenstenen. De brug, een ijzeren flap- of klapbrug, is als beweegbaar element van deze verkeersknoop eigenlijk een monument. Aan de dijk, de Molmaweg, staat gesloten bebouwing van meest kleine huizen. Aan de andere kant van het dorp staat open bebouwing van wat boerderijen, waaronder een monumentale, en burgerhuizen langs de dijk, vooral aan de oostzijde.
