28-5-1317, begr. Utrecht (Dom)

Dutch name: Guy of Avesnes 16. Guy (Guy) of Avesnes, b. 1253, Archdeacon, Bishop. Liege archdeacon at a young age; elected by the Dom Chapter as bishop (elect) 28-11-1291 under pressure from his father; receives the imperial investiture and the regalia 20-6-1294, but is not appointed bishop 1296 because of the opposition fueled by the Dampierres; is loaned by his brother Jan II of Hainaut-Holland to the actually Utrecht countries of Woerden and Amstel around 1300 and gives city right to Amsterdam in the latter quality; After the death of Bishop Willem Berthout, the Chapter of St. Salvator, St. Pieter, St. Jan and St. Marie (but not by the Dom Chapter) elects Bishop of Utrecht 5-8-1301 (recognized as elect by Pope Boniface VII for 15-3-1302, dedicated 20-4 / 6-5-1303; receives the regalia from King Henry VII 25-12-1309), remains as bishop of Utrecht closely linked to the expansionist policy of the Avesnes, eg by participating in the fight in Zeeland where he is captured on Duiveland 1304; after returning, however, managed to strengthen its position, both in the city of Utrecht and in the Oversticht (by repeatedly turning down that of Stellingwerf); participates in the provincial council of Keulen 1310 and the general council of Vienne 1311; restores the financial position of the diocese, among other things by living abroad for a few years in simple circumstances., d. 28-5-1317, cf. Utrecht (Dom)
