De gemeente Vollenhove is per 1-7-1818 gesplitst in de gemeenten Stad Vollenhove (spreekt voor zich) en Ambt Vollenhove (= het landelijk gebied om de stad heen. Overigens omsloot die gemeente tevens de stad en gemeente Blokzijl). Per 1-2-1942 zijn die weer samengevoegd tot de heropgerichte gemeente Vollenhove, die in 1973 is opgegaan in de nieuwe gemeente Brederwiede (waar Vollenhove de hoofdstad van werd), die op haar beurt in 2001 is opgegaan in de nieuwe gemeente Steenwijkerland.
