Notes about Louw Stoffels I.


De Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden is in het Rampjaar 1672 in oorlog met Frankrijk, Engeland, Munster en Keulen. Op 4 juli herstelt het gewest Holland het stadhouderschap door Willem III als kapitein-generaal te benoemen.
Het Eeuwig Edict is slechts enkele jaren daarvoor, in 1667, ingevoerd. Hierin hebben de gewesten, aangevoerd door de Staten van Holland, het stadhouderschap afgeschaft. Nu herroepen alle gewesten, weer vooropgelopen door de Staten van Holland, deze resolutie.
De Republiek heeft het zwaar. Het bestaat nog, maar het grondgebied is flink geslonken, het leger achter de waterlinie is gedemoraliseerd, de marine heeft ernstig moeten incasseren en de bevolking is angstig. Het land lijkt rijp voor de genadeklap. De roep van het volk om een Oranje als nieuwe sterke man kan niet langer worden genegeerd.
