Ola arbetade bl a i Köpenhamn som skräddare.Han flyttade till Amerika 1880. Från Malmö for han med segelbåt den 8 april och kom till Boston den 28 april. Sedan tog det ytterligare 13 dagar för färd till Chicago. Resan kostade 145 kronor. IChicago träffade han sin blvande hustru Hanna, som åkt över ett år tidigare. Ola tog sig namnet Hedman. Han arbetade som skräddare och startade en egen rörelse redan 1881. En symaskin inhandlades.År 1885 hade makarna byggt ett trevåningshus med källare för 2300 dollar. I skuld hade makarna då endast 600 dollar att betala på två år.År 1893 byggde makarna ännu ett trevåningshus med källare för en kostnad av 3000 dollar. En stor upplevelse för familjen var världsutställningen i Chicago.Familjen besökte Sverige år 1904 i juli månad.
