John Egerton, 2nd Earl of Bridgwater was born in June 1623.2 He was the son of John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgwater and Lady Frances Stanley.2 He married Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, daughter of William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Elizabeth Basset, on 22 July 1641 at St. James', Clerkenwell, London, EnglandG.3 He died on 26 October 1686 at age 63 at The Barbican, Red Cross Street, London, EnglandG.2 He was buried on 4 November 1686 at Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.2 His will was proven (by probate) in May 1687.2
He succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Bridgwater [E., 1617] on 4 December 1649.2 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Brackley [E., 1616] on 4 December 1649.2 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron of Ellesmere, co. Shropshire [E., 1603] on 4 December 1649.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire between 1660 and 1686.2 He was High Steward between 1663 and 1686 at Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.2 He graduated from Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 24 May 1663 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 13 February 1666/67.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Chester between 1670 and 1676.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancaster between 1670 and 1676.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire between 1681 and 1686.
