    The mother of Horatio is Catherine (Katie) Thornton who remarried after the death of her husband Joseph to Thomas Alfred Maitland in Glasgow, Scotland. They migrated to Dunedin, New Zealand in 1887 where Thomas set up a successful business as a merchant. Thomas and Catherine are buried in Anderson's Bay cemetery, Dunedin.
