Notes about Charles Edward Cook

Edward Charles Cook Here the IGI names the parties to the 1822 marriage as Charles Cook and Sarah Taplin. Also shown is the baptism at Kingston on 2nd March 1794 of Matthew & Alice Taplin’s daughter Sarah, while Pallot’s baptism index has an earlier entry for a second Sarah, daughter of another Sarah Taplin (no father shown) on 12th April 1772. If Charles was family, the couple should be named on the census, but they are not and this being so Charles birthplace cannot be checked and I think a Cook/Taplin marriage can be ignored.
On the other hand the 1851 census (HO107/162 f432 p3) has an Edward C. Cook (50) born Hampton (Court ?) and Sarah (40) born Dover, living at 11 Priory Place, Dover. Edward’s occupation is Railway Agent. On the 1861 entry (RG9/549 f15 p23) the ages are (61) & (45) and both are ‘House Proprietors’. Also named is mother-in-law Elizabeth Finner (89), born Hastings, Sussex. In 1871 (RG10/1010 f13 p19) their ages are (70) and (56) and Edward is (an unreadable) Merchant’s Clerk. Ten years later in 1881 (RG11/1003 f71 p50) ages are (83)and (63) and Edward is living off “Income from House Property”. Edward died in the December quarter of 1884 (Dover 2a 592) and the 1891 census (RG12/743 f23 p40) shows Sarah (75) to be living alone (except for a young female servant) at 36 Priory Rd which despite renaming and renumbering would seem to be the same house as the one the Cooks had occupied in 1851. The couple would seem to have been childless.
As neither the IGI nor Pallot’s index record Edward’s marriage, Sarah’s maiden name cannot be confirmed, but the presence of a mother-in-law, (widow in 1851) (HO107/1632 f123 p26) suggests that it was Finner and not Taplin. Certainly a large group of Finners lived in Dover; town in which Sarah spent her whole life.
