Hildegard werd al als kleuter met het niet veel oudere zoontje van graaf Dirk van Holland verloofd. Zij trouwden toen zij twaalf jaar oud was. Het huwelijk was voordelig voor Holland, niet alleen omdat het zich hiermee verbond met Vlaanderen, maar ook omdat de familie van Hildegard Karolingisch bloed had. Het echtpaar kreeg waarschijnlijk zes kinderen. Over hun dochters weten we vrijwel niets, behalve dat hun dochter Erlinde volgens de vita van de heilige Adalbertus door hem zou zijn genezen van blindheid. Hun zoon Arnulf volgde Dirk II op als graaf van Holland, terwijl zoon Egbert aartsbisschop van Trier werd.
