James, his wife Jane and daughter Frances Lintorn came to Van Diemen's land in 1824. He laid out Elizabeth Street, constructed Musgrove Battery and the building at the bottom of MacQuarie Street fi rst used by the Royal Engineers and later by the Railways Dept. for offices. He died in July 1846 and was buried in St. David's Burial Ground. His headstone was shifted in 1981 to Anglesea Barracks i n Hobart.
