Below is the itemized war record of Stephen Money Tunnell. It appears that he enlisited in the Mississippi

Volunteers on 28 Mar 1862. A little over 15 months later he was captured at Vicksburg MS on 4 Jul 1863. He was either ill or had been wounded since he was in the hospital apparently as late as 15 Dec 1863. He was in a POW detachment in the spring of 1864 and was finally listed as a deserter after 20 May 1864.

A note has been added from the record of events: "Note: The siege of Vicksburg commenced May 17,1863, and continued to July 4, 1863, when the entire army under Lt. Gen. Pemberton surrendered to U. S. Grant, comdg. U.S. forces. Paroled July 12; ordered to Enterprise, Miss., and reached there July 20. Furloughed July 23 for 30 days by order of Lt. Gen. Pemberton."
