Notes about Berend Battes de Roos

 

es (Hendrik Batte, later een van diens zoons) is in het bezit van een loden plaatje (10x10 cm), waarop een zonnewijzer is gegraveerd, gesigneerd met BdR 1816. Het is een eenvoudige zonnewijzer, waaraan geen rekenwerk te pas is gekomen en die alleen te gebruiken is aan een muur die zuiver oost-west staat.

8.0cm;">2. In: “Oomkens’  Regeringsalmanak van en voor de Provincie Groningen” zijn o.m. alle scholen met hun hoofden vermeld. Deze almanak is een voorloper van de huidige Provinciale Almanak of Jaarboek. Berent Battes de Roos komt tot en met 1854 daarin voor als onderwijzer aan een tweemansschool te Wedde, behorende onder Lager Onderwijs, 6e district. In 1855 is de plaats vacant. Hij is dus tot zijn dood in functie geweest.

In zijn tijd werd een nieuw schoolgebouw gesticht in Wedde, dat in 1815 werd ingewijd ‘op den 23 Augustus, integenwoordigheid van een zeer groot aantal ingezetenen van Wedde, van beiderlei kunne, onder welke zich vooral onderscheidden de heer Ekkringa, Schout der Gemeente, en Ds.Stratingh, Leeraar der Hervormden alhier, benevens derzelver Echtgenooten’.

ify; tab-stops: 8.0cm;">4. In zijn beroep gaf Berent er blijk van de methoden van Pestalozzi te kennen, die ‘volkomen met den ouden onderwijsslenter’ gebroken had. Pestalozzi was een Zwitser, die leefde van 1746-1827). In 1821, zo vermeldt een krantenartikel uit ongeveer 1915, behaalde hij ‘den tweeden rang’ en was toen 30 jaar oud. Hoe geliefd hij was in Wedde bewijst de salarisverhoging van 50 gulden per jaar, die hij kreeg, toen hij in 1818 te kennen had gegeven naar Drenthe te willen trekken. De inwoners van Wedde hebben hem daardoor voor zich behouden.
