Notes about Willem Antonius Steenbergen

Willem Antonius Steenbergen is op 09-04-1895 opgenomen in het Buitengasthuis te Amsterdam.
Hij werd 10 dagen verpleegd op de afdeling Mannen Zenuwen en is op 19-04-1895 overgeplaatst naar de afdeling Mannen Krankzinnigen.
Op deze afdeling werd hij 27 dagen verpleegd en op 16-05-1895 overgeplaatst naar Meerenberg te Bloemendaal.
Het ziekenhuis dateert uit 1849 en bood ruimte aan 250 patiënten. Het ziekenhuis zag direct een enorme groei in patiënten tot 1300 tegen het eind van 19e eeuw. In haar tijd was het provinciaal ziekenhuis Meer en Berg het modernste gesticht van Europa.
Tijdens de tweede wereld oorlog waren er veel joden ondergedoken in het ziekenhuis. De militaire politie heeft uiteindelijk verschillende joden weten op te sporen die uiteindelijk werden gedeporteerd.
Verschillende patiënten die in PZ verbleven hebben zich voor de trein gegooid wegens angst aanvallen, paniek aanvallen en zelfmoordgedachten. Dit werd makkelijk gemaakt, doordat er een spoorlijn lag tussen het ziekenhuis en het station van Haarlem, speciaal bedoeld voor de patiënten en goederen richting het gesticht.
In 1970 werden er nog maar 900 patiënten verpleegd als resultaat van een grondige reorganisatie en democratisering. In 1971 werd op het terrein de jeugd-psychiatrische kliniek Amstelland geopend.
Tussen 1987 en 2002 werd het volledige complex afgebouwd en is sindsdien niet meer in bedrijf geweest en flink in verval geraakt.
Geestesziekten in PZ Bloemendaal
Ondanks dat PZ het modernste ziekenhuis/gesticht was van die tijd gebeurden er waanzinnige dingen. Zo werden er medische experimenten uitgevoerd en zijn er nogal wat mensen overleden binnen de muren van PZ Bloemendaal. De geesteszieken werden bijvoorbeeld onderworpen aan elektro shock behandelingen, werden vastgebonden, patiënten werden gebruikt voor allerlei medische proeven. Privacy was er totaal niet, kortom het was geen fijne plek om terecht te komen.
