Het Leidsch Dagblad van 22-sep-1936 meldt over dit gouden echtpaar:
"Morgen zal het 50 jaar geleden zijn, dat onze stadgenooten Jacobus Schouten en mej. Elisabeth van Steenbergen, wonende 1ste Gorterstraat Nr. 37, zich in den ondertrouw begaven, terwijl zij op 6 October a.s. hun gouden huwelijksjubileum hopen te herdenken.
De gouden echtelieden zijn respectievelijk 70 en 69 jaar oud en mogen zich beiden nog in het bezit van een goede gezondheid verheugen. Uit hun huwelijk werden 13 kinderen geboren, waarvan er nog 11 inleven zijn. De verder nakomelingschap bestaat uit 31 klein- , en 3 achterkleinkinderen.
Schouten was bijna een halve eeuw als bleekersknecht werkzaam, waarvan ongeveer 30 jaar bij de firma Dingjan aan den Lage-Rijndijk en ruim 17 jaar bij de firma Spronk aan den Witte-Singel. Drie jaar geleden werd hij lichamelijk ongeschikt verklaard voor verderen dagelijkschen arbeid, zoodat hij sindsdien tot werkloosheid is gedoemd.
Mogen zij nog vele jaren voor elkaar gespaard blijven in het keurige huisje, dat zij reeds gedurende bijna een halve eeuw bewonen".
