Max Werkendam was een zoon van David Werkendam (563529) en Hilletje Bremer. Hij trouwde op 14 Maart 1934 in Amsterdam met Hendrica Emden.

Max Werkendam was autospuiter. Hij verrichtte illegaal werk voor de CPN.

Max Werkendam was samen met zijn moeder, zijn zusje Dora en vijf andere familieleden ondergedoken bij Dora's niet-Joodse verloofde in diens woning op het Amsterdamse Meerhuizenplein.
Op 10 december 1942 werd een inval op het adres gedaan, waarbij alle onderduikers werden gearresteerd.
Max, die op dat moment een wapen op zak had, werd niet doorgestuurd naar Westerbork (zoals de anderen), maar moest voor het Duitse Obergericht verschijnen.
Hij werd beschuldigd van ongeoorloofd wapenbezit en het vervalsen van documenten. Hij werd ter dood veroordeeld en op 22 februari 1944 in Den Haag geëxecuteerd.
