Württembergischer Rat, arbeitet 1553-1559 an der 1559 erlassenen württ. Kirchenordnung, erhält 1562 von Herzog Christoph die Burg in Neubulach. Reformator Württembergs, zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen. Begraben unter der Kanzel der Stiftskirche. Gedruckte Leichenpredigt Tübingen, Ulrich Morhardt Wittib, 1570, Titel, 2 Bl. 26 (Doppel-)Seiten, 2 Titel, 7 (Doppel-)Seiten unter dem Titel: "Ein Christliche Leichpredig / Bey der Bergrebnuß weilundt des Ehrwürdigen und Hochgelehrten Herrn / Johann Brentzen / Probsts zu Stutgarten / gehalten in der Stifftskirchen allda / den zwölften Septembris / Anno 1570. Item / Das erste Theil / sein D. Brentij Testaments oder letsten Willens / sein Predigampt / Glauben / Lehr und Bekanntnuß / betreffendt". Das Testamentende unterzeichnet in Bulach 20.8.1566.     Luther hat Brenz besonders geschätzt, zumal dieser in der Abendmahllehre gegenüber den Schweizern, Zwingli und Calvin, und den Oberdeutschen die Realpräsenz Christi im Abendmahl vertrat.
