Cornelis was matroos V.R.H. der Koninklijke Marine (Vrijwillige Reserve Hulpschepen).
Geplaatst aan boord van de hulpmijnenveger Hr.Ms. Libra (IJM 98).

Op Koninginnedag 1942 vertrok het verbindingsvaartuig "Traversa" van de Royal Navy ten 23.40 uur van de steiger te Milford Haven naar het Nederlandse flottielje mijnenvegers dat buiten de haven ten anker lag.
Aan boord van de "Traversa" bevonden zich bemanningsleden van het flottielje die terug kwamen van passagieren. Ter hoogte van de westelijke ton van de haveningang werd plotseling geroepen: ?Man overboard...!.
Er werd onmiddellijk een reddingsboei buitenboord geworpen terwijl het verbindingsvaartuig enige zoekslagen maakte. Vooralsnog zonder succes.
Later spoelde een lichaam aan, dat van matroos Cornelis Goedknegt, opvarende van de hulpmijnenveger Hr.Ms. Libra, bleek te zijn.

Cornelis is begraven op het Milford Haven Cemetery in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire te Engeland in Vak E, Grafnummer 390
De naam van Cornelis komt voor op Gedenksteen 1 op het Nederlands ereveld Mill Hill te Londen.
