De dood van mijn oom Eduard Wilbrink
De ouders van Eduard Wilbrink waren de Haarlemse kapper Eduard Jacobus Wilbrink en de uit Tricht afkomstige Jansje Smits. Zij trouwden in 1905 in Buurmalsen en kregen daar samen drie zonen: Peter, Johannes en Eduard Jacobus. De in 1914 geboren Eduard was tekenaar bij het Kadaster en verloofd met Jo Knobbout uit Beusichem. Hij was lid van het verzet en naar het schijnt betrokken bij de vluchtroute voor geallieerde piloten die deels door het Trichtse Veld liep. Vermoedelijk vanwege deze activiteiten werd hij eind 1944 door de Sicherheitsdienst gearresteerd. Hij zei daarbij tegen zijn vader: "Ik heb het niet gedaan, waarvan ze mij beschuldigen." Ingewijden zeiden dat hij iemand in bescherming wilde nemen. Eduard werd vervolgens overgebracht naar de gevangenis in Utrecht. Hier werd hij gemarteld om hem tot bekentenissen te dwingen.

In de nacht van 6 op 7 maart 1945 raakte de SS-officier Hans Albin Rauter, de nazi-Duitse leider van de politie in Nederland, bij de Woeste Hoeve bij Apeldoorn zwaargewond bij een toevallige aanslag. Een dag later executeerden de Duitse bezetters als represaille 117 gevangenen bij de plaats van de aanslag en nog eens 111 gevangenen uit verschillende Nederlandse gevangenissen. Uit de gevangenis op het Wolvenplein in Utrecht werden zes personen, w.o. Eduard Jacobus Wilbrink, uitgekozen die op 8 maart 1945 in Fort De Bilt werden gefusilleerd.

Zijn schoonzus moest naar Utrecht komen om Eduard te identificeren. De volgende dag werd zijn stoffelijk overschot overgebracht naar het huis van zijn ouders in Buurmalsen, waar het werd opgebaard. Zijn nichtje Jansje herinnert zich dat nog goed: "Peter, mijn vader, tilde mij op om in de kist te kunnen kijken. Ik weet nog heel goed dat ik een zwart rondje op zijn voorhoofd zag en veel gaten in zijn overhemd." Voor de vader van Eduard was dit alles zo traumatisch, dat hij zijn kapperszaak verkocht en bij zijn zoon Peter en zijn gezin in Utrecht ging wonen.

Tot 2006 werden in het kader van de Dodenherdenking namens het gemeentebestuur op het graf van Eduard op de begraafplaats te Buurmalsen bloemen gelegd. In datzelfde jaar besloot de familie om het graf van Eduard over te laten brengen naar het Nationaal Ereveld in Loenen.
