Toen Arnoldus er mee ophield, was het zijn zoon Johannes Carolus die de zaak overnam en zijn vleugels uitsloeg naar de utiliteitsbouw. Onder de inspirerende leiding van Johannes werden in en rond Rotterdam vele scholen gebouwd. In de Maasstad stond toen al fier het Sint Franciscus Ziekenhuis overeind, gebouwd door oprichter Arnoldus. Zijn opvolgers kregen er ook mee te maken, want het hospitaal werd op gezette tijden met nieuwe gebouwen uitgebreid.

Johannes Sondermijer overleed plotseling in 1919. Zijn nog studerende zoon Fransiscus Johannes stond op 23-jarige leeftijd voor de zware taak een op volle toeren draaiend bedrijf over te nemen.
