De kinderen zijn door de wederzijdse familie opgenomen en daar grootgebracht. Alleen de oudste zoon Aart, die tot dan toe zijn ouders terzijde stond op 'de Groote Kamp', verhuurt zich nu als boerenknecht. In mei 1910 trouwt hij Hendrika Pater, dochter van Evert Pater en Aaltje Bloemendaal die geruime tijd op de Pelmolen onder Barneveld hebben gewoond. Hij verdient dan zijn brood bij de regionale spoorwegmaatschappij die een verbinding van Nijkerk via Voorthuizen, Barneveld en Lunteren naar Ede exploiteert. In 1938 werd deze overgenomen door de Ned. Spoorwegen waar Aart dan in dienst komt tegen een jaarsalaris van ??O 1387,39.
Op 18 mei 1942 wordt hem op eigen verzoek eervol ontslag verleend wegens invaliditeit. Hij overlijdt 7 weken later aan tuberculose. Het echtpaar woonde op een boerenbedrijfje dat een uitweg had op de Drostendijk onder Barneveld. Nu vindt u daar de wijk Norschoten.
