Nicolaas Martinus werd missionaris in de orde van de Missionarissen van het H. Hart (MSC) te Tilburg. In deze congregatie werd hij op 28 september 1917 geprofest. Op 15 augustus 1922 werd hij priester gewijd en daarna was hij werkzaam in de missie te Nieuw Guinea. In 1923 arriveerde hij in het tegenwoordige bisdom Merauke. Hij was betrokken bij de moeizame pogingen van de missie om openingen te scheppen in dit ontoegankelijke gebied, de samenwerking met het gouvernement in het bijeenbrengen van mensen in dorpen en het oprichten van 'beschavingsschooltjes'. Zijn taak was die van ‘woudloper’. Pastorale werkzaamheden waren er weinig, het ging er vooral om uit te vinden waar mensen waren. Hij maakte tochten naar o.a. Boven-Digul waar de regering in 1926 een verbanningsoord oprichtte. Van 1935 tot 1942 was hij provinciaal overste voor Nederland van de congregatie, daarna missie-procurator. Deze beleidsfuncties brachten hem op visitatie naar verschillende missiegebieden. In 1947 werd hij door paus Pius XII benoemd tot apostolisch vicaris (later bisschop) van Manado (Celebes). Op 15 mei van dat jaar werd hij in de Oisterwijkse St. Petruskerk door de toenmalige bisschop van 's Hertogenbosch, mgr. W. Mutsaers tot bisschop gewijd. Enige maanden later, nadat hij nog in Nederland zijn zilveren priesterfeest had gevierd, vertrok Verhoeven naar zijn bisdom, waar hij o.a. een geheel door de oorlog verwoeste kathedraal en seminarie moest opbouwen. Als bisschopswapen koos Mgr. Verhoeven een zilveren kruis op een rood veld met als hartschild een gouden Christus-monogram op een groen veld. De wapenspreuk "Nil Nisi Christum" (Niets dan Christus) werd ontleend aan de tekst van de apostel Paulus. In 1960 werd een laan in Oisterwijk naar hem vernoemd. In 1970 trok hij zich terug uit zijn ambt en verbleef hij voornamelijk in Tilburg. Op 22 mei 1972 - bij zijn gouden priesterfeest en zilveren bisschopsjubileum - werd hij door het gemeentebestuur van Oisterwijk begiftigd met de zilveren legpenning van zijn geboorteplaats.
