Notes about Catharina Adriaen van Iersel

Rond Catharina van Iersel heeft een verbeten strijd gewoed tussen de katholieken en protestanten van Tilburg.

De (protestantse) Staten Generaal van Nederland had bepaald dat katholieke ambtenaren uit hun taak moesten worden ontheven. Op hetzelfde moment waser toevallig een vacature bij het secretariaat van Tilburg. Met in het achterhoofd de bepaling van de regering, werd de protestant Peter van Gilsbenoemd. Deze was vrijgezel en woonde in De Swaen, een oud familiebezit van de familie Colen. Peter van Gils werd daar verliefd op Catharina,dochter van Barbara Colen. Rond die tijd wat Catharina's vader, Adriaen van Iersel al overleden. Deze was bij leven Burgemeester van Tilburg enbovendien katholiek.

Catharina raakte in verwachting van Peter van Gils, maar haar familie stemde niet in met een (gemengd) huwelijk. Peter van begon daarop een actievoor de Schepenen van Tilburg (zeg maar het gemeentebestuur) om het kind in de gereformeerde kerk gedoopt te krijgen. Grootmoeder Barbara Colen lietde baby echter onderduiken. Pas na veel aandringen kwam zij weer met het kind voor de dag maar toen was het al katholiek gedoopt met de naam Frans.

Peter van Gils is daarna nooit meer getrouwd. Hij liet zijn zoon Frans een aanzienelijk bedrag na. Na de dood van Peter hebben de gereformeerdevoogden van Frans, toen nog een kind, uit de katholieke omgeving weggehaald en op gereformeerde scholen geplaatst. Eerst in Waalwijk, daarna inBreda maar daarna steeds verder van huis, in Dordrecht en Leiden.

Veel succes had de gerefomeerde kerk echter niet met deze godsdienstige opvoeding. Frans trouwde met een katholiek meisje uit Baarle Nassau. Toenhij op 25-jarige leeftijd overleed, stelde de katholieke kerk een officiële verklaring op dat hij altijd trouw rooms was gebleven.
