Notes about Petrus Bolsius

Ze waren met achten en stalen alle nachten.

Het was een droevige stoet die in de vroege morgen van 25 november 1804 Eindhoven binnenreed. Pieter Bolsius, schout te Eersel met twee karren waar
op vijf mannen, een jongen en twee vrouwen. Het was de beruchte bende van Steensel. Jaren lang hadden ze de dorpen onveilig gemaakt met gewelddadige inbraken.

De vrouwen werkten als spionnen en
vertelden de overige leden waar wat te halen viel. De leider van de bende was Joost de Rooy, een gezeten burger, kerkmeester en koorzanger. Het verhaal vermeldt nog dat Joost een paard met verkeerd on
derslagen hoefijzers bereed, om mogelijke achtervolgers te misleiden. De leden van de bende waren bij de bevolking en de politie met naam en toenaam bekend. Toch konden zij hun kwalijke praktijken ged
urende acht jaren ongestoord uitoefenen. Al met al een vreemde geschiedenis.
