Notes about Arnoldus Janssen "Aert" Rovers

Vanuit Dinther vertrokken twee broers,Jan en Hendrik Roovers, om zich te Riethoven bij Waalre te vestigen als landbouwer. Later huwden zij te Waalre met twee zusjes, Anna Catharina en Maria Donckers, die beiden geboortig waren van Valkenswaard. De grote mobiliteit van de familie Roovers gedurende de 18e en 19e eeuw is opvallend. Rond 1790 vertrok Arnoldus Roovers uit Valkenswaard naar Gerdingen, een zeer kleine argrarische gemeenschap in Belisch Limburg (1816 134 inwoners), waar hij in 1792 huwde met Joanna Elisabeth Vran(c)ken uit Bocholt (BL) en burgemneester (agent municipal) gedurende de Franse tijd was. Nadien keerde hij terug naar Valkenswaard. Zijn zoon, Laurentius Roovers, trouwde in 1822 te Bocholt met Maria Cecilia Schrijvers, de dochter van Jan Laurentius Schrijvers, burgemeester van 1808 tot 1814 aldaar. Hij bewoonde een door hem en zijn vrouw in 1824 gebouwd huis op het kerkplein te Bocholt dat in 1951 afgebroken werd. De eerste steen van dit huis is bewaard gebleven en thans in het bezit van het echtpaar Geutjens-Capals te Bocholt. In dit kleine dorpje was hij als tapper en koopman een notabel ingezetene. De overlijdensakte van M.C. Roovers-Schrijvers uit 1878 omschrijft het sterfhuis als volgt: Ïn hare woning gelegen te Bocholt, gehucht Dorp, huis genaamd Roovers." De (vroegere) epistelzijde in de parochiekerk van Bocholt werd Roovers-zijde genaamd vanwege de nauwe relatie tussen kerk en café; de deur in deze zijde van de kerk leidde naar de tapperij Roovers
Jan Hendrik Roovers (1830-1896) genoot als vijfde kind van het echtpaar Roovers-Schrijvers zijn opleiding aan het Kollegie (Stadscollege, later Koninklijk Atheneum) te Tongeren en vestigde zich na omzwervingen rond 1850 aan het vrijthof te Maastricht als grossier in textiel (in dit pand kwam later de sociëtei Union). Op latere leeftijd, in 1876 trouwde hij in het schilderachtige Limburgse stadje Thorn. Het echtpaar Roovers-Alberts ging na hun huwelijk in de vanoudsher deftige Breedestraat op n0 43 te Maastricht wonen, terwijl de al in 1863 opgerichte firma J.H. Roovers een paar huizen verder in de Platielstraat gevestigd werd. De oudste zoon, Arthur J.A. Th. Roovers (1877-1941), zette na de dood van zijn vader in 1896 de firma Roovers voort.
Het echtpaar Roovers-Vollmer bewoonde van eind 1906-1912 een villa op de Heugemerweg no 21 te Maastricht en vervolgens de villa Providentia op de Scharnerweg (no 4, 64 en later 114).
Bij onderhandse acte ingaande 07.01.1918 associeerde Arthur Roovers zich met zijn jongere broer J.Henri.A Roovers (1883-1950). De firma werd omgezet in een commanditaire vennootschap. Na de eerste wereldoorlog werd de zaak ondergebracht in een nieuw pand aan de Alexander Battalaan te Maastricht. Tussen de beide wereldoorlogen in had de firma bovendien een filiaal te Luik. In 1958 werd de zaak omgezet in een NV: J.H. Roovers confectieindustrie NV, waar inmiddels de derde generatie als directeur was aangetreden.
Sedert 1966 is een kleinzoon van de genoemde succesvolle Maastrichtse koopman uit de 19e eeuw, Drs. Henri Jean Marie Roovers, geboren Maastricht 08-09-1924 uit het echtpaar Roovers-Van der Burg, wethouder van financiën in zijn geboortestad. De eens door zijn grootvader opgerichte firma Roovers is in liquidatie maar de familie bloeit te Maastricht.
