    Kapitein Posthumus met de “Omlandia”
    Een buitengewoon staaltje van moed en beleid werd in augustus 1940 getoond door de kapitein en de opvarenden van de Nederlandse coaster “Omlandia”.
    De “Omlandia”, eigendom van mw. G. Albers-Panjer te Hoogezand, voer in een klein konvooi met nog vijf andere kleine schepen van Southampton naar Falmouth.
    Op 8 augustus, omstreeks 09.00 uur, werd het konvooi door 12 vijandelijke vliegtuigen aangevallen.
    De “Omlandia” was bewapend met een machinegeweer op het achterdek, maar had geen marineschutters aan boord. Het machinegeweer moest door de bemanning worden bediend.
    Terwijl de roerganger, lichtmatroos J. Lolkema, opdracht kreeg om koers te houden, beantwoordde kapitein Posthumus het vuur van de aanvallers.
    Bommen vielen aan alle kanten langs het schip, dat hoewel niet direct geraakt, toch grote schade opliep. Ook werd er een vliegtuig neergeschoten, welke treffer hoogstwaarschijnlijk op rekening van kapitein Posthumus kon worden geschreven.
    Vier van de aanvallende vliegtuigen deden een geconcentreerde aanval op de “Omlandia” .
    Lichtmatroos Lolkema werd door mitrailleurvuur getroffen, maar weigerde zijn post te verlaten. Kapitein Posthumus raakte eveneens zwaar gewond door een bomscherf, die een onderbeen wegsloeg. Nadat hij in de stuurhut was gekropen verbond
    Omdat de “Omlandia” zwaar beschadigd was, water maakte en slagzij begon te maken werd besloten het schip te verlaten. De eerste machinist zag kans om met een doek voor het gezicht de met gas en rook gevulde machinekamer binnen te dringen

    Pas nadat het schip was verlaten, werden de luchtaanvallen gestopt.
    Op 50 meter afstand van het schip gekomen, bleek ook deze sloep door mitrailleurvuur dermate te zijn beschadigd dat zij ging zinken. Daarop roeide men terug en met inspanning van de uiterste krachten slaagden de niet -gewonden erin het

    De zwaar beschadigde “Omlandia” werd door een bergingsvaartuig binnengesleept.
