De familie Duijvelaar/Duivelaar komt waarschijnlijk oorspronkelijk uit Biggekerke. Daar bestond al in de 15e eeuw een landgoed genaamd Duijvelaar. Mathijs Adriaen Duijvelaar dijkgraaf van de vier Bannen van Duiveland had een grafsteen met 3 zeshoekige sterren. Dit is ook het wapen van Biggekerke.

Sommige genealogen proberen de familie te koppelen aan de family Van Duiveland (Smallegange). Hiervoor bestaat geen enkel bewijs.
