Tijdens de Nederlandse arbeidsmigratie in de jaren vijftig verhuisden veel mensen uit noordoost Nederland naar de randstad. Henk kon aan de slag als tramconducteur bij het Gemeentevervoerbedrijf Amsterdam, hij was zijn gezin vooruit gereisd en verbleef enige tijd in pension. Eind 1956 betrokken Henk en Martje met zes kinderen vanuit Annen (Drenthe) een nieuwe eengezinswoning in de nieuwe westelijke tuinstad Slotervaart in Amsterdam. Daar werden nog eens drie kinderen geboren. Later werkte Henk nog als hovenier bij de toenmalige Publieke Werken van de gemeente en daarnaast was hij actief vakbondslid.

Vanwege zijn armoedige start in Eext, altijd hard werken, slechte werkomstandigheden in een Drentse aluminiumfabriek waar o.a. melkbussen werden gemaakt (ARBO bestond natuurlijk nog niet) had Henk een broze gezondheid, astma enz. Helaas geboren op verkeerde tijd op de verkeerde plaats, je hebt het niet voor het zeggen. Hij overleed aan de gevolgen van complicaties na een hartingreep, een operatie waarvoor de medisch specialisten van nu bij wijze van spreken hun schouders ophalen.
