Notes about Cornelis Hartgers
De Meubelmaker. Op 27 oktober 1890 werd in het Drentse Hoogeveen Cornelis Hartgers geboren. Hij groeide op en leerde het vak van meubelmaker. Na zijn diensttijd bij het Vierde Regiment Veldartillerie in Leiden ging hij niet terug naar zijn geboortedorp maar werd conducteur op de "Blauwe Tram" die een verbinding onderhield tussen Leiden en Den Haag. Daar leerde hij Martha Klapwijk kennen, een kinderverzorgster in Voorburg. In 1914 brak de eerste wereldoorlog uit en moest hij weer onder de wapenen. Hij kwam als milicien kanonnier naar de veldartillerie te Ede. Vanwege de matige soldij die een vrijgezelle soldaat ontving besloten Martha en hij op 25 juni 1915 te gaan trouwen. Ze betrokken twee kamers bij Bram ten Ham aan de Molenstraat te Ede. Ook kreeg hij daar een schuur ter beschikking waar hij het vak van meubelmaker weer uit kon gaan oefenen. Tevens werd hij oppasser bij een officier van de veldartillerie. Een oppasser ontving naast zijn normale soldij ook geld voor ongeregeld werk. Hierdoor verbeterde zijn inkomsten enigszins. Vrijwel ongestoord gingen zo de mobilisatiejaren voorbij en in 1917 verhuisde Cornelis Hartgers naar de Grootestraat waar hij zijn meubelfabriek "De Nijverheid" vestigde. In de winkel verkocht hij naast de zelf vervaardigde meubels ook kinderwagens, vloerkleden en rookwaren. Na de mechanisatie van de meubelproductie in de twintiger jaren braken er zware tijden aan voor "De Nijverheid". De afzet van meubels stagneerde en Hartgers moest zijn meubelfabriek sluiten. De verkoop van tabaksartikelen ging echter door. Hij verkocht in 1922 de meubelfabriek en de daarbij behorende woning aan de Grootestraat. Hij kocht het er naast gelegen woon/winkelpand en vestigde daar zijn sigarenwinkel. De tabakswinkel kreeg de naam "GEJOMA".
