De familie Clauwaerts is verbannen uit Brugge vanwege te radicale opvattingen. Hun afstamming is terug te brengen tot de Guldensporenslag op 11-07-1302. De KLAUWAERTS (een leeuwenklauw in het wapenschild) vochten hier tegen de LELIAERTS (een lelie in het wapenschild).
Ene Hendrik GROOTJANS alias GRIMMERTINGEN († voor 1376) bezat in 1336 een kasteel te Wihogne (Nudorp, Luik, België) en was gehuwd met Hadewijk van GOETSENHOVEN (dochter van Goswin, heer van Goetsenhoven-bij-Tienen en Neer-Helisem, vaandelridder, kapitein te Woeringen in 1288, ondercommandant van de Brabantse KLAUWAARDS tijdens de Guldensporenslag op 11-07-1302, kapitein van Rijssel in 1304 gehuwd met Margaretha van RODEHORST).
De Guldensporenslag vond plaats op het Groeningheslagveld te Kortrijk op 11 juli 1302 tussen milities van het graafschap Vlaanderen en het leger van de koning van Frankrijk (Fransgezinde leliaards) en de liebaards, later ook klauwaerts genoemd, aanhangers van de graaf.
