Hertog van Saksen (973). Slaat in 974, 983 en 994 Deense aanvallen op Duitsland af. Zijn steun voor Otto III was beslissend voor diens koningskeuze. Maarschalk van de rijksdag in Quedlinburg van 986. Neemt deel aan de veldtochten van 991 en 995 tegen de Slaven. Vergroot zijn eigen bezittingen, vooral rond de Weser. Is in 1001 bij de koning in Ravenna. Huldigt namens de Saksische stam koning Hendrik II, nadat die de rechten van de Saksen heeft bevestigd. Had conflicten met de graven van Stade en de aartsbisschoppen van Bremen. Had de grafelijke rechten in het grootste deel van Saksen en bezat vele voogdijen. Bernhard had minstens een maîtresse, waarvan de naam niet bekend is.
Bernard en Hildegard zijn bij dezelfde pestepidemie omgekomen.
