Matheus Jacobus (Thijs) de Haan was het vierde kind van Caspar IV (Jebke) de Haan en Hendrika Hezemans. Na de dood van zijn vader in 1894 begint Thijs een eigen schildersbedrijf. In 1908 vestigt hij zich op Markt 28 in het pand van Bockholts naast Café Neuf.
