Lourens Verhage was tijdens de Franse bezetting "Maire" van Aagtekerke. Na de Franse overheersing werd hij op 16-05-1814 beëdigd als Provinciaal Schout en op 09-08-1825 benoemd tot Burgemeester. Samen met Predikant Jongeneel en andere Walcherse ingezetenen werd hij na een opstand tegen het Franse bestuur op 11-02-1814 gevangen genomen, doch de volgende dag weer vrijgelaten.
