Durch die entstandene Not nach dem Tod ihres Mannes Jan Auwen mussten die älteren (schulpflichtigen) Kinder bei fremden Leuten untergebracht werden. Der älteste Sohn Jan mußte schon mit 12 Jahren beim Bauern arbeiten um zu seinem Unterhalt beizutragen. Die Tochter Bilda kam ins Armenhaus, wo sie auch während der gesamten Schulzeit blieb.
