Louis Coster was an adopted son. He was the son of Gonda Coster-Hamburg, who died in 1929. Gonda was a niece of Bernard Coster.
Louis Coster werd op 20 juni 1911 in Utrecht geboren. Hij was enig kind en verloor op zeer jonge leeftijd zijn vader, waardoor hij een moeilijke jeugd had. Bij een broer van zijn vader vond hij zijn tweede huis, zijn oom deed zeer veel voor hem. Zijn moeder overleed in 1929. Nadat Louis het Mulo-diploma had gekregen studeerde hij in Utrecht voor Middelbaar Engels A. Aan de Haagse school voor taal en letterkunde bereidde hij zich voor het B-diploma voor. Na het verkrijgen van deze bevoegdheid werd hij in Utrecht leraar aan de Bijzondere vijfjarige HBS op de Plompetorengracht en aan de RHBS aan de Kruisstraat. Hij had veel liefde voor zijn werk, was plichtsgetrouw, geestig en gulhartig. Toen hij als jood zijn ontslag kreeg, heeft hij daarna nog gelijktijdig in Hilversum en Leeuwarden les gegeven aan joodse leerlingen. Toen alle joden naar Amsterdam moesten verhuizen is hij samen met zijn pleegouders ook gegaan, in november 1942. Hij werd in het voorjaar van 1943 naar Westerbork gevoerd, vanwaar hij met zijn familie is weggevoerd. Hij werd op 16 april 1943 in Sobibor vermoord.
