Louis de Groot behoort tot de zogenaamde Koselgroep. De deportatietrein naar Auschwitz stopte (soms) kort op het station van Kosel, ca 80 km van Auschwitz. Alle jongens en mannen tussen 15 en 50 jaar werden er dan uit gehaald en gescheiden van de familieleden.
Louis de Groot kwam terecht in de staalfabriek in Malapane, Opper-Silezië (het tegenwoor-dige Poolse Ozimek, Opole). Daar overleed hij, twee maanden nadat zijn vrouw en twee kinderen in Auschwitz waren vermoord. In het naburige dorp Szczedrzyk is hij begraven op de r.k. begraafplaats, in een massagraf van dwangarbeiders.

Op 18 oktober 1989 is daar in aanwezigheid van een grote Nederlandse delegatie een gedenkteken ingewijd met de namen van 43 uit Nederland gedeporteerde joden. Ook de naam van Louis de Groot staat erbij.
