Izak van Gelder werd als dertienjarige naar het Nederlands Israëlietisch Seminarium in Amsterdam gestuurd. Door materiële omstandigheden kon hij de studie niet voltooien. Hij werd uitgenodigd leraar bij de joodse gemeente in Den Haag te worden. Door zelfstudie slaagde hij in 1906 alsnog voor het examen waarmee hij een rabbinale titel verwierf. Hij was toen al vader van vijf kinderen.

In 1917 werd Izak van Gelder benoemd tot rabbijn in Den Haag, welke post hij vanaf 1925 combineerde met het opperrabbinaat van het ressort Zeeland. Izak van Gelder heeft vele Hebreeuwse gedichten geschreven.

Izak van Gelder was een zoon van Jozef van Gelder en Sara Grootkerk. Hij huwde in 1900 met Lea Coster. Ze kregen acht kinderen. In 1917 werd hij benoemd tot rabbijn. In 1925 werd hij opperrabbijn van Zeeland. Hij was alom bemind. In februari 1943 werden Izak van Gelder en zijn vrouw naar Westerbork gedeporteerd. Hij had uitstel van deportatie kunnen krijgen wegens ziekte, maar wilde niet dat er iemand anders in zijn plaats zou gaan.

Vier kinderen van Izak van Gelder en Lea Coster overleden tijdens de oorlog: Jacques, Sara Dina, Henriette en Bernhard.
