De familienaam wordt ontleend aan de lokatie "Hombergh" gelegen in het noorden van Lottum. Uiteraard zijn er in Duitsland ook plaatsjes die zo heten en waaraan andere families hun naam aan ontlenen, maar door het voorvoegsel "van den" is het nagenoeg zeker dat het niet ontleend aan die plaatsjes maar aan dat van Lottum.
De naam telde bij de volkstelling van 1947 116 levende naamdragers, waarvan 97 in Limburg. Volgens het Meertens-instituut waren er in 2007 340 naamdragers in leven, waarvan in Venlo 60, Arcen en Velden 79, Horst aan de Maas 18 en Sevenum 13.
