Notes about Jacob van Saanen

Jacob en Hilletje overlijden op jonge leeftijd. Jacob net voor de watersnoodramp van 1916, Hilletje een jaar later. Hun dochter Pietertje (Pie) schrijft er in haar Herinneringen het volgende over:

Beiden werden maar 50 jaar oud. Vader overleed op 13 Jan. 1916 en moeder op 30 mei 1917. Vader was bijna nooit ziek geweest, vatte een zware kou en is aan vliegende reumatiek gestorven. Hij is maar een week of 3 ziek geweest en stierf ’s avonds om 6 u. de avond vóór de watersnood 1916. Toen lag m’n moeder met een keelontsteking in bed. ’s Morgens om 5 uur werden we gewekt door buren. Die riepen: de dijk is doorgebroken. Het was een vreselijke toestand, dat kan ik me nog best herinneren. Vader zijn lichaam lag in de voorslaapkamer, in een bedstede. Nu stond ons huis nogal hoog, wat een geluk was. Onderhand kwam het water uit de Zuiderzee al snel nader. De koeien, die op stal stonden, begonnen klagelijk te loeien. Het was ook ongeveer melktijd. Enfin, Teun die bijna radeloos was, ging, met grote laarzen aan, de buren helpen. Mijn moeder werd ook aangekleed en wij, mijn zus Tet, ikzelf en Pau en Jaap konden op zolder bij de overburen voorlopig verblijven. Tegen de avond van die dag zijn we per roeibootje naar Schellingwoude gebracht. We werden liefderijk opgenomen in het gezin van moeder v. Vuure[3]
