      Oom Kees was altijd een beetje een avonturier. Kampeerde graag, maakte lange tochten op
      de fiets. Nam alle familieleden wel een keer op sleeptouw om te kamperen. Had later een
      probleem ermee dat er overal prikkeldraad gezet werd en je niet zo maar meer in de
      duinen mocht kamperen. Zijn interesses waren nogal veelzijdig: hij hield van dieren, had
      een hond – cocker spaniel – die hij meenam op de boot toen hij emigreerde in november
      1955 naar USA. En hij bespeelde het kerkorgel van de Gereformeerde Kerk en had bij zich
      thuis ook een orgel met voetpedalen gemaakt. Hij had een kano en later een zeilboot. Hij
      had als liefhebberij o.a. fotograferen en de foto’s werden ook zelf thuis ontwikkeld en
      afgedrukt. Hij en zijn ouders waren zeer streng gelovig.
      Er was een verhaal in de familie dat oom Kees in de oorlog iets te maken heeft gehad met
      de Willem Ruys. Dat volledige verhaal heb ik pas later vernomen via de weergave van de
      gebeurtenissen door Ad van Dijk in het boek “ De dokter en de oorlog” geschreven door Jac.
      Cats p.72-77, en een krantenknipsel dat aan dat voorval werd gewijd in 1989 , toen hij een
      keer op vakantie uit USA in Nederland was. Verder ook via contact met Ad van Dijk en
      dr W.H.Dudok van Heel die destijds een dvd hebben uitgegeven over de bouw en de
      redding van de Willem Ruys (de Engel van Vlissingen). Bovendien nog het boek Worsteling
      om Walcheren 1939-1945 van Hein Bollen p.175-6. Zelf heeft hij zijn oorlogsactiviteiten
      nooit benadrukt.
      Het leek me leuk om wat we nog kunnen vinden aan gegevens van o.a. deze gebeurtenis te
      verzamelen. Dus ik heb mijn neef Bill en nichten Marianne and Joanne Jobse in Michigan
      USA gevraagd of zij nog gegevens en foto’s hadden van hun vader en toestemming
      gevraagd de teruggevonden foto’s en documenten (digitaal) bijeen te zetten in een soort
      dokumentje om dat aan te bieden aan het Vlissings Archief en het
      Oorlogsmuseum Westkapelle, het NIOD en het Bevrijdingsmuseum. Dat heeft geresulteerd in dit pdfje.
      Uit deze gegevens blijkt dat oom Kees zich intensief heeft begeven in het verzet. Hij moest
      onderduiken want hij werd gezocht door de Duitsers. Hij is volgens een verklaring van zijn
      gewezen gewestelijke commandant van de O.D. verdienstelijk geweest bij de radio afdeling
      van Gewest Zeeland en betrokken geweest bij de inlichtingendienst. In 1983 is hem het
      Verzetsherdenkingskruis toegekend.
      Alles bij elkaar bijna een “ jongensverhaal “over de oorlog!
